2020, performance improvements, redesigned site, future themes and a coupon code!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I'd like to start by wishing everyone here a happy new year! 2020 will mark the 14 year anniversary of ipsfocus, and should also include some exciting updates to Invision Community. After joining the Invision team as a designer a couple of months ago, I'm really looking forward to working with the team to improve the software for future updates, so stay tuned for that!

For those of you with a keen eye, you may have noticed that a slight redesign of the main website was released a few hours ago. Despite being quite similar to the old site in terms of design, the new site has actually been coded from scratch and focuses on neater code and speed improvements (a smaller css file, less javascript files, webp images, etc). A matching forum theme will ideally come at some point in the future.

With this as inspiration, I now plan on auditing all IPSfocus themes in an attempt to improve their performance and/or allow for easier customization. Chameleon will be the first to receive updates, where the focus will be on improving scrolling performance by allowing the blur effect to be customized (or even disabled) much more easily. Other themes which currently struggle in terms of performance such as Titan and Uniform will follow.

Once the performance updates have been finished, I plan on releasing a few more themes, which is something I've been wanting to do for a while now. If there's anything you've been wanting in an Invision theme, let me know in the comments below!

And if you've made it this far, why not celebrate with a coupon code which reduces all themes by 20% until January 20, 2020. Simply enter 2020 as a coupon during checkout to receive the discount! That's a lot of 20's!

:)

Hi Ehren,

Great news on joining the team at IPS, here's hoping you'll make some decent changes there! 😀

I recently visited a site (I can't remember what it was) that allowed its users to toggle between a light mode and dark mode on a single theme. It meant that the overall experience was identical for users on light or dark themes, whereas right now to use a light theme on my site it's an entirely different look and experience. I'd love to see this make it into your themes. (A toggle-able light and dark version of Animate? Yes please!)

I also think I read on the IPS forums that it's possible to have a theme pre-select the light or dark toggle of a theme based on the browsers own colour scheme (e.g. if a user runs their browser in a dark mode). I don't know how feasible that is, it's just what I recall having read.

A light and dark toggle is something I’d love to have in my themes at some point. I plan on releasing a theme in the not too distant future which will come in both light and dark variations. Adding a toggle icon to switch between the two should be quite simple.

If you can find the article about auto-selecting themes based on the OS setting, that would be helpful. Browsers support a @prefers-color-scheme media query which allows designers to provide different css depending on the OS colour scheme, however implementing that into Invision Community would be a monumental task due to the huge amount of colours which are used throughout the suite.

Congrats Ehren,

One think I'd like to see on the thems is to be able to Toggle features on and off. As simple as it is currently to add snow effects, etc to a them by adding code. A simple toggle switch would be much improved in my eyes. Maybe a Features Tab with all the options in one place?

Also something that I've commented on in the past; having a clear description about what theme comes with certain features. Some themes come with snow, some with halloween and xmas settings but you're not actually told what you get with what theme.

That's all from me!

Hi Dean,

I'd love to have settings for every feature, however unfortunately due to the requirement of using Designers Mode to create new settings, all of my themes are feature locked in terms of toggle switches. It takes a significant amount of time to enable Designers Mode for one theme, let alone 120, so hopefully this new method of enabling and disabling features will make things easier :)

The new method will simply involve modifying one template file, changing lines from "yes" to "no" and vice versa.

Congrats @Ehren, I thought you were one and the same! Glad to see IPS brought in the best!

With 4.5, I'll look to update all the custom themes you've made in the past for me. As far as new themes, all I can say is lightweight and fast with focus on mobile more than desktop. It seems my users are more on mobile these days, so it has to be a priority. This also means maybe limiting things on mobile for faster load times.

One thing I don't like about the IPS theme engine are all the separate JS and CSS files, I really hope they come up with a way to consolidate them on the output.

What about Deflection?

Deflection is already a very optimized theme in terms of performance. Have you noticed any issues in particular that need to be addressed?

This update will introduce a "Dark/light mode" icon which will allow your members to easily switch between light and dark versions of your themes. This is especially useful if you own light and dark versions of the same theme (such as Chameleon), however the toggle can be added to any ipsfocus theme - for example, you could use Ortem as your light theme and Carbon as your dark theme.

Once Invision Community 4.5 is released, these themes will also receive a significant reduction in their _ipsfocus_base.css file due to improvements which have been made in the default Invision files.

Hey

Is there a way for this button to reflect the dark / light mode setting within iOS or is it only manual at the moment?

Thanks!

The theme selection will be manual as I unfortunately don't have an automatic solution for frontend themes, sorry!

I would like to see a theme with the colours blue or navy blue and yellow combined like 👇🏼

@Ehren

Your new themes will created after 4.5 Final version or during betas...?

and what is the total time approximitaly for a custom theme non-heavy customized?

I’ll be updating my themes during the beta phase :) Custom themes vary depending on what is needed but they usually range from 2-4 days.
